I came across this youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uThZ756GdRc) and got introduced to Saul Leiter for the first time. I liked his photographs and the way he thought of photography. His photography was inspired by paintings, in particular a group of artists that formed ‘Les Nabis’.
“A picture is essentially a flat surface covered with colours, assembled in a certain order”
“The work of art should not be a depiction of reality, but an abstraction of reality, an array of metaphors and symbols”
Les Nabis
I think the video spoke to me because an abstraction of reality has always been more interesting than just the reality. But the idea has never been put into words in my head. I just took photos of what looked interesting to me. After watching that video, I went for a photo walk around the neighbourhood and attempted photos in Leiter’s style.
I had certain keywords in my mind: layering, colours red and yellow, anchors and reflections.
